Needs

  • need for classification to “make sense” of vast content archives
  • need to get more people tagging
  • Tagging can be seen as dull
    • Enthusiastically adopted by geeks, blank faces from average joe
    • Therefore creates a skewed, tech-savvy-biased taxonomy => distorted view
  • Need to educate kids / young people
    • Familiarise with “good” web technology
    • Improve literacy?

Approach

Benefits

  • For users - Educational

    • Gives them ownership of their perception
    • Drives them to participate rather than just consume
    • Teaches them to research, organise and classify
    • Reinforce good spelling!
      • Points for a word in dictionary? Points deducted for txt-speak?
  • For BBC –
    • Usual tagging benefits – emergent taxonomy, etc
    • Can track “hot topics” amongst target user base
    • Can drive navigation along desired associative trails
      • treasure hunts etc?
      • bonus points for adding particular pre-defined tags?
      • Word games based on tags applied/used, etc?
    • Can tie-in with childrens / schools programs.
      • E.g. research topic X / start at this page and find answers to these questions…
